Nihar Malaviya is CEO of Penguin Random House with dual global and U.S. responsibility for the company’s more than 300 imprints spanning 21 countries across six continents. He is a member of Bertelsmann’s Group Management Committee (GMC) as well as the Penguin Random House Global Executive Committee.
Nihar began his career with Bertelsmann, Penguin Random House’s parent company, in 2001 as a participant in the Bertelsmann Entrepreneurs Program. In 2003, he moved within the group to Random House, successfully taking on a number of leadership positions resulting in his appointment as President and COO of PRH U.S. in 2019. During his tenure in publishing, Nihar spearheaded the creation of a variety of industry-first capabilities in data science, supply chain, technology, and consumer insights, and has been collaborating with colleagues to reach the widest possible audience for the company’s authors and their books across multiple formats and platforms.
As CEO, Nihar supports publishing independence, editorial autonomy, and drives the creation of competitive advantages that position the company for growth. As part of his growth strategy, he is focusing on advancing Penguin Random House’s Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion commitments and meeting the company’s sustainability goals.
Nihar holds an MBA in Finance and Marketing from the NYU Stern School of Business, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. Nihar is a member of the board of Yale University Press. He resides in New Jersey with his wife and two children.
