Phillip Lai's work experience begins in 2000 as a Resident Ophthalmologist at George Washington University. Phillip then worked as a Glaucoma Fellow at UCSF Medical Center from 2003 to 2004. From 2004 to 2008, Phillip served as a Private Practice Ophthalmologist at Hudson Eye Physcians and Surgeons. Phillip then worked as the Director of Glaucoma Service at Metropolitan Hospital and a Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at New York Medical College from 2005 to 2008.

Phillip joined Vistakon - Johnson & Johnson Vision Care as the Director of Ophthalmology Projects from 2008 to 2010. Phillip then joined Genentech in 2010, initially as an Associate Medical Director from 2010 to 2013, then as a Medical Director from 2013 to 2014, and finally as the Senior Medical Director - Product Development Ophthalmology from 2014 to 2015.

In 2015, Phillip joined Avalanche Biotechnologies, Inc. as the Director of Clinical Development - Translational Medicine from January to October. Phillip then returned to Genentech as the Senior Medical Director from 2015 to 2020. From 2020 to 2021, Phillip worked as the Principal Medical Director at Genentech, and then served as the Senior Group Medical Director, Ophthalmology and Neurology Group Lead from March to September 2021.

Currently, Phillip Lai holds the position of Chief Medical Officer at Perfuse Therapeutics, starting in September 2021.

Phillip Lai began their education by attending Lincoln High School from 1987 to 1991. After their high school education, they pursued their Bachelor's degree at Brown University from 1991 to 1995. Following their undergraduate studies, Phillip Lai attended Brown Medical School from 1995 to 1999, where they earned their MD degree.
