Maria Richards

Maria Richards currently serves as Interim Director at the Great Basin Center for Geothermal Energy, collaborating on Department of Energy and State projects. With a long tenure at the SMU Geothermal Laboratory since 1995, Maria oversees the Applied Geophysics MS program, supports students, manages laboratory operations, and coordinates outreach initiatives. As a Solutionist at Maria Geothermal since 2016, Maria focuses on bridging industry divides to foster collaboration and problem-solving. Previously, Maria held the position of President of the Geothermal Resources Council from 2017 to 2023, advocating for geothermal resource use and knowledge. Early career experience includes working as a Health Sanitarian at the Lenawee County Health Department. Maria holds a Master’s in Physical Geography from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and a BS in Geography - Geomorphology from Michigan State University.
