PHPA began as a Council of local helicopter pilot unions formed under the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU). The charter of the Council provides for the sharing of information on industrial issues and affords the opportunity for local unions to work together on solutions for issues of common interest. Those remain the primary goals of the organization today. 

PHPA works to promote the interests of professional helicopter pilots to include professionalism, safety, regulatory representation, education, standards and training for the continued growth and profitability of the commercial helicopter industry.

PHPA works closely with IFALPA and ICAO to further helicopter safety and improve helicopter regulatory language. The Vice-Chair’s seat for the IFALPA Helicopter Committee is occupied by a PHPA Executive Council Member.
