Byron Smiley is a Senior Image Processing Scientist at Pixxel since April 2023, specializing in satellite calibration and geolocation, with successful geometric calibration of TechDemo satellites TD1 and TD2 for JACIE 2024. Previously, Smiley served as a Geospatial Engineer at Albedo, focusing on accurate photogrammetry in remote sensing satellite software. Experience includes positions at Facebook as a Hardware Test and Automation Engineer, Xmotors.ai as a Camera Calibration Scientist for self-driving cars, and roles at Planet, Google, and Skybox Imaging in geometric calibration. Smiley started a career in research at BAE Systems and DigitalGlobe and conducted calibration experiments at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics. Educational background includes a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Colorado Boulder and a B.A. in Physics from Reed College.
