In addition to their role at PK Electrical, Purcell founded STEMspire in December 2011, a nonprofit organization aimed at empowering young women in STEM fields, and holds the title of author for "Unlocking Your Brilliance: Smart Strategies for Women to Thrive in STEM," published in August 2011. Purcell obtained a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Widener University, where studies were completed from 1985 to 1989.
