Karina Gasbarrino, PhD has a diverse range of work experience. Karina is currently working as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Research Institute of the MUHC / McGill Genome Centre, a position they have held since June 2019. In addition to their postdoctoral role, Karina is also a Co-Founder and COO at PLAKK Inc., a company utilizing artificial intelligence and deep learning to revolutionize the characterization of atherosclerotic plaques. Karina'swork focused on developing and managing a bio-bank of human carotid plaque specimens, blood samples, and isolated primary cells to identify biomarkers and mechanisms of carotid atherosclerotic plaque instability and stroke risk. Karina also conducted research on the role of the adipokine adiponectin and its receptor pathway in atherosclerotic plaque instability.

Karina's work experience also includes a role as a Research Assistant at the McGill Auditory Sciences Lab at the Montreal Children's Hospital from June 2010 to September 2011. In this position, they assisted and trained graduate students in conducting experiments on animal models to understand the mechanism of ototoxicity of cisplatinum and find possible ways to prevent hearing loss caused by this chemotherapeutic agent. Karina performed hearing assessments and processed cochleae for histological evaluation.
