Indira Basnett is a physician, advocate, and healthcare leader with over three decades of experience in Nepal. Indira previously served in the government for 16 years and worked with the DFID funded & OPTIONS managed Nepal Safer Motherhood Project for nine years. Indira also served as the Country Director of Ipas/Nepal for nine years. Throughout their career, Basnett has successfully advocated for reproductive rights inclusion in the Constitution of Nepal and has been a key leader in task-shifting initiatives to community healthcare providers and midwives for emergency obstetric care. Indira has also led the development of the National Skilled Birth Attendant Policy and contributed to the integration of Emergency Obstetric Care and Safe Abortion Care into the Safe Motherhood Plan. Since 2016, Basnett has been the Director of Global Public Sector Partnerships at Possible Health.
Indira Basnett has a diverse education history. Indira obtained a Master's Degree in Urban Health from Mahidol University in Bangkok from 1991 to 1992. Prior to that, they attended Odessa Medical School in Ukraine from 1975 to 1982 and earned a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree in medical and surgery.
In their earlier education years, Indira attended Lal Bagh Girl's Inter College in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India from 1970 to 1972, where they completed their High School education with a focus on Physical Sciences. Indira also attended RK Intermediate College in Uttar Pradesh, India from 1960 to 1970, where they completed their High School education with a focus on basic science, English, and Hindi.
Additionally, Indira has obtained a certification in Quality Control in the Health Sector from John Hopkins Hospital. However, the specific month and year of obtaining this certification are not provided.
