Ellen Markowitz is a coach, teacher, educational psychologist who believes connection is a super power, and they founded PowerPlay NYC in 1998 to advance the lives of NYC girls through sports, with PowerPlay NYC serving 2,000 girls a year. They currently work as a Career Development Specialist at the International Rescue Committee, providing career and employment coaching for refugees and individuals with special immigrant visas, and they partner with workforce and community agencies, nonprofits and employers. They are an Adjunct Instructor at Piedmont Virginia Community College since 2019, teaching Developmental Psychology and facilitating learning about growth across the lifespan. They earned an MBA and a Ph.D in educational and sport psychology, they taught at the University of Virginia and James Madison University, and they currently teach at Piedmont Virginia Community College.
