Melania Strycharska

Lead Scientist, Platform Development at Protillion Biosciences

Melania Strycharska has a diverse and extensive work experience in the field of scientific research. Melania currently holds the position of Lead Scientist, Platform Development at Protillion Biosciences since 2023. Prior to this, they served as the Manager of Platform Integration at Iridia, Inc. from 2022 to 2023.

Melania's significant work experience includes their role as a Research Scientist and Project Lead in Protein Sequencing at Oxford Nanopore Technologies Ltd from 2018 to 2022. During their time there, they developed a unique technique for threading peptides through nanopores to identify and characterize protein sequences. Melania also served as a Product Owner and gained expertise in Agile Project Management.

Before joining Oxford Nanopore, Melania worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at The Francis Crick Institute from 2015 to 2018. In this role, they focused on developing a single molecule microscopy assay for live imaging of yeast replisomes during DNA replication. Melania designed a system to monitor the composition and dynamics of the replication machinery.

Melania's career began with their position as a Research Fellow at Cancer Research UK from 2014 to 2015. Melania also held the role of Graduate Student Researcher at the University of California, Berkeley from 2006 to 2013, where they solved a crystal structure of a bacterial replicative helicase.

During their undergraduate studies, Melania worked as an Undergraduate Researcher at the Molecular Biology Department at Princeton University in 2005. Melania conducted Senior Thesis research, focusing on purifying a bacterial quorum sensing receptor and growing crystals of the receptor protein.

Melania's early experience includes roles as a Research Assistant at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics, Karolinska Institutet, Sweden in 2005, and as a Research Assistant at the Department of Physics, Princeton University in 2003.

Melania Strycharska completed their education as follows:

- From 2006 to 2013, they attended the University of California, Berkeley, where they earned a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Biophysics.

- From 2002 to 2006, they studied at Princeton University and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physics with High Honors, along with a certificate in Biophysics.

- In 2004, they briefly studied Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Oxford.

- In 2001 and 2002, they pursued interdisciplinary studies in Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Warsaw.

- Additionally, Melania Strycharska attended XIV LO from 1997 to 1999, but the field of study is unspecified.

Melania also holds several certifications, including "Building a Product from Scratch," "LinkedIn Learning Highlights: Project Management," "10 Mistakes Leaders Should Avoid," "Be the Manager People Won't Leave," and "Body Language for Authentic Leadership." These certifications were obtained between 2021 and 2023 from LinkedIn.
