Bethany Houghton

Bethany Houghton is a PhD candidate and lecturer at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam since September 2019, where Bethany also serves as a Junior Lecturer and works at the International Law Clinic as a research and teaching assistant. Additionally, Houghton has been involved with the Public International Law & Policy Group since September 2017 as Assistant Counsel, Senior Research Associate, and Research Associate. From September 2019 to January 2021, Houghton co-founded the Virtual Human Rights Lawyer. Previous experience includes an assistant role at Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam from October 2018 to August 2019 and a researcher position at Law Business Research from May 2018 to September 2018. Houghton holds two Master of Laws degrees from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Erasmus University Rotterdam and earned a Bachelor of Laws from Durham University.

The Public International Law & Policy Group, a Nobel Peace Prize nominee, operates as a non-profit, global pro bono law firm providing free legal assistance to its clients, which include governments, sub-state entities, and civil society groups worldwide. PILPG provides pro bono legal counsel to clients on peace negotiation, drafting of post-conflict constitutions, creation and operation of transitional justice mechanisms, and ways to strengthen the rule of law and effective institutions. Since 1995, we have worked with over 40 state and non-state parties and provided legal assistance to all major war crimes tribunals.
