Michael Kovaka currently holds the position of Senior Peace Fellow and Senior Counsel at the Public International Law & Policy Group, where responsibilities include directing the South Sudan Constitutional Development Project and supporting the National Constitutional Review Commission and Southern Sudanese authorities. Previous experience includes serving as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Denver's Sturm College of Law, focusing on the transition from law studies to professional practice, and as Special Counsel at Cooley LLP, specializing in media counseling and defense. Additionally, Michael Kovaka spent over nineteen years at Dow Lohnes PLLC, representing various media entities in civil litigation and First Amendment matters. Michael Kovaka earned a BA in Theater from Stony Brook University and a JD from Stanford Law School.

The Public International Law & Policy Group, a Nobel Peace Prize nominee, operates as a non-profit, global pro bono law firm providing free legal assistance to its clients, which include governments, sub-state entities, and civil society groups worldwide. PILPG provides pro bono legal counsel to clients on peace negotiation, drafting of post-conflict constitutions, creation and operation of transitional justice mechanisms, and ways to strengthen the rule of law and effective institutions. Since 1995, we have worked with over 40 state and non-state parties and provided legal assistance to all major war crimes tribunals. We maintain close partnerships with 12 of the top 15 law firms and have over 700 alumni working in the fields of law, government, foreign policy, business, and social advocacy around the world.
