Alan Liu

CEO at Quintessent

Alan Liu is the current CEO of Quintessent and has previously served as a technology consultant for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the ARPA-E. Alan has also worked as a lead engineer for Booz Allen Hamilton.

Alan Liu began their career as a lead engineer for Booz Allen Hamilton. Alan then transitioned into a role as a photonics consultant for DARPA, where they supported the development of the DARPA PIPES program within the Microsystems Technology Office (MTO). In this role, Alan was responsible for identifying application needs, mapping state of the art technology solutions, outlining investment white-space, technology performance extrapolation, technology validation, program structure formulation, and source selection.

Eventually, Alan left DARPA to become a technology consultant for the ARPA-E. In this role, Alan was a subject matter expert in the development and management of energy related research programs aligned to ARPA-E's mission. Some of the programs Alan supported include ENLITENED and MONITOR.

In 2019, Alan became the CEO of Quintessent. Under Alan's leadership, Quintessent has become a leading provider of integrated photonic solutions.

Alan Liu received their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Electronic & Photonic Materials from UC Santa Barbara. Alan also holds a Bachelors of Science from Tulane University in Physics & Mathematics with a minor in Business.
