Som Guan has been working in the software engineering field since 2017. In 2017, they did a bit of contracting work with a client who needed a bespoke 'demosaicing' algorithm for processing video. Som improved the speed of the custom algorithm by about 45%, by identifying several bottlenecks and rewriting the code in a more efficient way. From 2006 to 2017, Som Guan worked at the iCinema Centre for Interactive Cinema Research, UNSW Australia as a Technical Systems Architect, Software Engineer, Academic Tutor (Casual) and Deployment Technician (Casual). As Technical Systems Architect, they delivered 4 ARC-funded research projects to completion as lead engineer, adapted aspects of modern development frameworks to the unique environment of arts research and completed the transition to Unity3D-based development. As Deployment Technician, they supported the deployment of iCinema systems to Mines Rescue Pty Ltd at 4 different sites outside of Sydney, ran tours for 3,359 visitors over 15 days as part of Sydney Festival 2008, provided 3 weeks of systems support at Shanghai eArts Festival 2008, and demonstrated systems to visitors of diverse professional backgrounds.

Som Guan completed a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from UNSW between 2003 and 2007. Prior to this, they attended Hurlstone Agricultural High School from 1997 to 2002.
