Co-Founder & CEO at Radiation Imaging Technologies

Filipe Castro is a Portuguese engineer and entrepreneur. Filipe is the co-founder and CEO of Radiation Imaging Technologies, a company that develops new devices for in-vivo and real-time dosimetry of brachytherapy cancer treatments.

Before starting their own company, Filipe worked as a research assistant at Universidade de Aveiro, where they were involved in the development of different concepts of small dimension PET scanners. Filipe then did a student traineeship at Siemens Healthcare, followed by a PhD at Portuguese Research Foundation – FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia), where they worked on high-resolution gamma cameras based on wavelength-shifting fibers (WSFs) and silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) readout.

After their PhD, Filipe became a post-doc researcher at Universidade de Aveiro, where they continued to work on the development of PET scanners. It was during this time that they came up with the idea for Radiation Imaging Technologies. In 2015, they left academia to focus full-time on their startup.

Under Filipe’s leadership, Radiation Imaging Technologies has become a leading player in the field of brachytherapy dosimetry, with their devices being used in hospitals all over the world. The company has won numerous awards, including the “Best Medical Device” at the 2019 European Startup Awards.

Filipe Castro has a PhD in Engineering Physics from Universidade de Aveiro and a MSc. in Biomedical Engineering with specialization in Image and Radiation from Universidade de Coimbra. Filipe also has a certification from University of Cambridge in Certificate in Advanced English (CAE).
