David is an author and freelance journalist based in Bozeman, Montana. For the past forty years, the catastrophic loss of biological diversity on Earth has been a central part of his concerns and his work. To put that more positively: He writes about conservation.
His seventeen books include The Song of the Dodo (1996), Spillover (2012), The Tangled Tree (2018), and Breathless: The Scientific Race to Defeat a Deadly Virus (2022). His magazine work has appeared in National Geographic, The New Yorker, Harper’s, Outside, and elsewhere. He grew up in Cincinnati, with a forest for a backyard, and was educated at Yale and Oxford. He has lived in Montana since 1973.
