Jenny Smith has a diverse work experience in the mental health field. Jenny has worked as a Member of the Self-harm Advocacy Co-design Committee at BEING - Mental Health Consumers since 2023. Prior to that, they served as a Policy Committee member and a member of the Lived Experience Panel at Suicide Prevention Australia from 2019.

In 2017, Jenny joined Central and Eastern Sydney PHN, where they held multiple roles, including being a part of the IAR DST Working Group and the Community Council. Jenny also served as a Lived Experience Advocacy Delegate (LEAD) representative in the advisory group, providing advice and support to the National PHN Mental Health Lived Experience Engagement Network (MHLEEN).

Jenny has further experience as a Member of the Mental Health Consumer Special Interest Group at Consumers Health Forum of Australia (CHF) since 2022 and as a Digital Service - Text Crisis Supporter at Lifeline Australia since 2022. Jenny also volunteered as a Program Volunteer at the Australian Kookaburra Kids Foundation in 2022.

Additionally, Jenny has been involved in various roles within the mental health sector. These include being a part of the GMHPN Country Executive Committee - Australia at the Global Mental Health Peer Network since 2021, serving as a Youth Mentor and a Volunteer Recruitment Champion at Raise Foundation since 2018, and volunteering for the Diversity and Disability Alliance as part of the Newsletter & Social Media Team since 2021.

Lastly, Jenny has been actively involved with One Door Mental Health since 2016. Jenny'sroles there have included serving on the Consumer Consultative Committee, being a member of the Board of Directors from 2018 to 2021, and working in the Information and Support Outreach Service - TRISS from 2016 to 2018.

Jenny Smith attended Rosebank College Five Dock from 1986 to 1989, where they obtained their Year 10 certificate in School Certificate. In terms of additional certifications, Jenny obtained the Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training from LivingWorks Australia in 2017. Jenny also earned the Mental Health First Aid Certificate from Mental Health First Aid Australia in October 2018, and the Youth Mental Health First Aid Certificate from the same institution in May 2018.

Raise Foundation

Based in high schools, we provide young people with a caring, independent volunteer mentor who shows up each week, just for them. With time to listen, one-to-one support with a mentor gives young people a voice, empowering them to cope better, today and in the future. We've recruited, screened and trained over 7,200 volunteers to become youth mentors. These incredible, everyday people show up week after week as an independent, caring and trusted mentor. Together we've supported over 10,700 young people. Every program is managed by our qualified counsellors who oversee the smooth, safe and successful delivery of our programs. We can’t remove the barriers and challenges that young people may experience throughout their adolescence and the rest of the lives, however, through our program, young people are equipped with the tools, skills and resources they need to support their mental health, social and emotional wellbeing and engagement. Empowered to use these skills, teenagers are more able to navigate the complexity of adolescence and the challenges life may throw at them.
