Joshua Essex has a diverse work experience. Joshua co-founded and currently serves as the CTO at Recidiviz since October 2017. In this role, they lead the engineering organization in building a data platform, products, and analyses to advance towards a smaller, fairer, and safer justice system.
Prior to Recidiviz, Joshua worked at OPOWER for 8 years starting from June 2011 to February 2019. During their time at OPOWER, they held various roles including Principal Software Engineer, Technical Lead, and Architect. Joshua played a crucial role in building the platform and products that drove energy efficiency on a global scale, resulting in saving 30 terawatt-hours of energy and eliminating 15 million tons of CO2. As a leader, they successfully managed a group of 40 engineers across 6 teams, specifically focusing on developing the communications platform and outbound products.
Joshua began their career as an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant at George Mason University in January 2011, where they worked until May 2011.
