David Spata has a diverse work experience in the rail transportation industry, specifically in environmental management and consulting. David started their career at BC Rail in 1994, where they worked as a Technician in Environmental Engineering and later became the Supervisor of Corporate Environmental Services. During their time at BC Rail, they played a key role in training employees on environmental regulations, overseeing environmental approvals for projects, and implementing a digital mapping system. David also responded to hazardous materials incidents and managed the treated wood disposal program.
In 2004, David joined CN as an Environmental Field Officer, responsible for hazardous waste management and applying the Environmental Management Program to former BC Rail operations. David then founded DPS Consulting Inc. in 2005, providing environmental management consulting services to various clients, including Canadian Pacific, BC Ministry of Transportation & Infrastructure, and Golder Associates.
David joined Canadian Pacific Railway in 2013 as the Manager of the Vegetation Program, where they managed the Integrated Vegetation Management Program, including plan development, consultant and service provider management, compliance verification, and community relations.
Most recently, David has been working at REMCAN Projects LP since 2014. David started as the Manager of Contracts & Estimating and later became the General Manager. Currently, they hold the position of Vice President, Technical Services.
David Spata attended The University of British Columbia from 1990 to 1995, where they obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Geography with a specialization in Environmental Studies. In addition to their formal education, David has also obtained various certifications throughout their career. These include certifications in Industrial Vegetation & Noxious Weed Control from the BC Ministry of Environment (obtained in November 2012), Transport of Dangerous Goods from BC Rail / CN Rail (obtained in March 2003), Advanced Tank Car Specialist from the Transportation Technology Centre in Pueblo, CO (obtained in 2003), Special Waste Training from BC Rail (obtained in October 2002), Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Tank Car Specialist from the Justice Institute of BC (obtained in 2000), Incident Command System from the Justice Institute of BC (obtained in 1999), Freshwater Oil Spill Control from Texas A & M University in Galveston, TX (obtained in 1998), Canadian Railway Operating Rules (CROR) from BC Rail / CN Rail (obtained in January 1997), Hazardous Materials Technician from the Association of American Railroads in Pueblo, CO (obtained in 1996), and Oil Spill Containment & Recovery from the Petroleum Industry Training Service in Calgary, AB (obtained in 1996).
