Pieter Roelofs started their work experience in 1998 as a Research Assistant at Palazzo Grassi SpA. Pieter then served as an Art History Teacher at Instituut Posterheide from 1999 to 2001. Following this, they worked as a Parttime Faculty at Emerson College, teaching the History of Art II: Renaissance and Baroque from 2000 to 2003. In 2001, they joined Radboud University as a Junior Researcher and Junior Teacher in the Department of Art History until 2003. From 2003 to 2006, they served as a Curator at Museum Het Valkhof. Since 2006, they have been associated with the Rijksmuseum, where they have held various positions, starting as a Curator of 17th-Century Dutch Painting until 2018. Pieter then became the Head of Paintings and Sculpture from 2018 to 2023, and currently holds the position of Head of Fine and Decorative Arts.
Pieter Roelofs attended multiple educational institutions throughout their career. In 2015, they participated in the Center for Curatorial Leadership Fellowship Program in New York. From 1991 to 1997, they studied Art History and Classical Archaeology at Radboud University. In 1997, they pursued Art History at the Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome. Additionally, they studied Art History at the University of Amsterdam in 1995-1996, and Philosophy at Radboud University in 1992-1993. Before that, from 1990 to 1991, they attended the HAN University of Applied Sciences for the College of Education for Secondary School Teachers. Finally, they completed their secondary education at Pax Christi College from 1984 to 1990.
