Principal Advisor – Research And Development at Rio Tinto

Cory Smith is an experienced metallurgical engineer and process advisor with a career spanning over three decades in the mining and metallurgy sectors. Currently serving as the Principal Advisor - Processing at Rio Tinto since July 2013, Cory leads process initiatives for the KUC Studies team and manages research and development projects aimed at process improvements in mineral processing, hydrometallurgy, and smelting/refining. Previous roles include Principal Advisor - Operations and Senior Metallurgical Engineer at Kennecott Utah Copper, where responsibilities included operational readiness for the MAP Plant and design review for capital projects. Prior to that, Cory held positions at Pocock Industrial, The Alta Group, Johnson Matthey, and the United States Bureau of Mines, focusing on metallurgical process support and research. Cory holds an M.B.A. from Westminster University and a B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Utah.
