Melissa Burke began their work experience in 2011 as a Medical Laboratory Technician specializing in Microbiology at UChicago Medicine. Melissa processed specimens for susceptibility testing and utilized Vitek MS for organism identification. In 2012, they transitioned to the role of a Medical Technologist in the Blood Bank, where they performed serological testing and selected/modifed blood products for patients. In 2013, Melissa joined Riverside Healthcare as the Point of Care and Pre-analytic Coordinator, overseeing point of care testing at four laboratories and supervising laboratory assistants. Melissa later became the Quality Manager, responsible for ensuring compliance and quality control. As of May 2020, they hold the position of Director of Laboratory Services at Riverside Healthcare.
Melissa Burke obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Biochemistry from the Illinois Institute of Technology, where they attended from 2006 to 2010. Melissa then pursued a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Medical Laboratory Science at Rush University from 2010 to 2012. Melissa also holds additional certifications, including a Point of Care Specialist certification from AACC, which they obtained in June 2014, and a Medical Laboratory Scientist certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), which they obtained in October 2012.
