Marco Gielkens is an experienced professional in the field of gene therapy and biosafety with a long-standing career at the Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu since September 2000. Currently serving as the Coordinator of the Gene Therapy Office, Marco oversees the licensing and permit processes for clinical gene therapy studies in the Netherlands. Previous roles include Project Coordinator, responsible for implementing national policies and coordinating various projects, including the new GMO Decree and substances of very high concern. As the National Focal Point for the Biosafety Clearing House, Marco plays a key role in coordinating activities under the UN Convention on Biological Diversity. Additionally, expertise as a Senior Risk Assessor for GMOs involves assessing environmental safety dossiers for the Dutch Ministry of Environment. Earlier positions at Wageningen University included Post-doc and AIO, focusing on molecular genetics and physiological analysis related to plant pathogens.
