Machiel Zwanenburg has extensive work experience in the financial industry. Machiel started working at Robeco in 1999 as a Quantitative Researcher, responsible for quantitative research in guaranteed products and hedge funds. Machiel also played an active role in developing and implementing risk management systems for credit portfolios. In 2003, they became a Risk Manager, overseeing risk management functions. In 2009, they were promoted to Head of Client Portfolio Risk, where they were responsible for the oversight of financial risks in client portfolios. In 2011, they took on the role of Financial Risk Manager, defining and implementing a risk framework. In 2014, they became an Operational Risk Manager (ad interim) before being promoted to Portfolio Manager Core Quant Equities, Director later that year. In 2016, they joined Stichting Pensioenfonds Robeco as a Member of the Board of Trustees, and in 2018, they became the Chairman of the Risk Management Committee.

Machiel Zwanenburg completed their education in a chronological manner. Machiel attended Lycée international des Pontonniers from 1989 to 1990, although no specific degree or field of study is mentioned. Machiel then pursued a Bachelor's degree in Econometrics at Erasmus University Rotterdam from 1993 to 1998. Following this, they attended The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) from 1998 to 1999, graduating with a Master's degree in Economics. In 2016, they obtained a Level A pension fund governance certification from SPO.
