James Hall

Dean of University Studies & Executive Director, SOIS at Rochester Institute of Technology

James Hall is currently the Dean of University Studies and Executive Director, SOIS at Rochester Institute of Technology. Prior to that, they were the Executive Director and Convener for the Consortium for Innovative Environments in Learning from August 2013 to August 2017. In that role, they were responsible for program development, growth, and stewardship for a gathering of innovative liberal arts colleges and experimental liberal arts programs. Before that, they were the Director and Associate Professor of the New College at the University of Alabama from August 2002 to July 2014. In that role, they were responsible for the growth and development of the New College. Prior to that, they were an Associate Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago from August 1991 to July 2002. In that role, they were the Associate Head and Director of Undergraduate Studies for the Department of African American Studies.

James Hall began their educational career at Huron Heights Secondary School. James then went on to study religion, English, and American studies at Wilfrid Laurier University, where they earned their M.A. Finally, they completed their Ph.D. in American studies at the University of Iowa.

They are on a team with Doreen Edwards - Dean College of Engineering, Yong Tai Wang - Dean, College of Health Sciences and Technology, and Zachary Butler - Interim Department Chair, Department of Computer Science. Their manager is Ellen Granberg, Provost & SVP, Academic Affairs.
