Klaas van Zyl has extensive work experience in the field of transportation planning. Klaas worked as a Principal Specialist at Royal HaskoningDHV from 1996 onwards, where they were responsible for various transportation projects. This included facilitating the planning and implementation of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Tshwane, developing the Integrated Rapid Public Transport Network for Tshwane City, and creating public transport master plans for cities in Rwanda and South Africa. Klaas also worked on toll income forecasting, mode choice models, and evaluation of public transport policies. Prior to their role at Royal HaskoningDHV, Klaas was a Director at TRC Africa from 1989 to 1996.
Klaas van Zyl holds a PhD in Transportation Planning from the University of Stellenbosch, which they obtained from 1997 to 2002. Prior to that, they pursued a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Transport Planning and Engineering from the University of Leeds, England, from 1984 to 1985. Klaas began their academic journey by completing a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Pretoria, South Africa, from 1973 to 1976. Later, they pursued a BSc Honors in Transportation Engineering from the same university, from 1977 to 1978.
