Steven Lauwereys has extensive work experience in the aerospace and defense industry. Steven currently serves as a Board Member at BeLightning, a joint venture aimed at developing systems for the F35 combat aircraft. Prior to this, they held the position of Chief Strategy and Policy Officer at the Royal Higher Institute for Defence.
Steven's earlier experience includes roles at Belgian Defence, where they were involved in various projects related to industrial cooperation and the development of defense technologies. Steven held positions such as Belgian Defence - Essential Security Interests Mgt Cell - Industrial Cooperation, Belgian Defence F-35A Transition lead for Weapon System Support, and Head of bureau for F-16 Combat Aircraft Management and Energy & Technical Installations.
Before joining Belgian Defence, Steven worked as an F-16 Weapon System Integrator. Overall, their work experience demonstrates their expertise in the defense sector, particularly in the areas of aerospace technology, industrial cooperation, and strategic policy development.
Steven Lauwereys has a diverse education history. Steven obtained a degree in Electronics Engineering - Aeronautics from the Royal Military Academy in Belgium between 1989 and 1994. Steven furthered their education at the same institution and completed a Master of Science degree in Political and Military Sciences from 2010 to 2011.
In 2014, Steven attended IHEDN - Institut Des Hautes Etudes de Défense Nationale in France, where they participated in the SERA 26 - Session Européenne pour les Responsables d'Armement. This program focused on Collaborative Military Procurement Programs.
Apart from their formal education, Steven has also acquired additional certifications. In 2018, they successfully completed a course in Neural Networks and Deep Learning from Coursera Course Certificates. Furthermore, they obtained an EF SET English Certificate with a proficiency level of C2 (81/100) from the EF Standard English Test in June 2020.

About the Institute The Royal Higher Institute for Defence (RHID) is the reference body or think tank of the Belgian Ministry of Defence in the field of security and defence. It is also responsible for managing the multiannual programme for scientific and technological research, including the security and defence studies, as well as the scientific research of the Royal Army and Military History Museum. In order to fully accomplish its mission, the RHID has set the objectives of focusing the attention – by identifying research and discussion topics, and themes of interest – as well as deepening and disseminating knowledge. Organizing conferences, colloquia and seminars as well as publishing papers by researchers at the Belgian Ministry of Defence, and the Institute in particular, fully contribute to knowledge transfer. The High Studies for Security and Defence, in the form of a meeting place with seminars and visits, provides training in these fields for high-level staff, both from the ministry and the civil sector. Through national and international partnerships, the RHID has developed an extensive network to exchange ideas and experiences.
