Ignasi Aliguer

CTO & Co-Founder at SAALG Geomechanics

Ignasi Aliguer has a diverse work experience in the field of geomechanics and engineering. Ignasi is currently the CTO & Co-Founder of SAALG Geomechanics, an engineering firm focused on advanced numerical solutions and soil & rock parameter characterization. This company aims to bridge the gap between academic research and industry.

Prior to SAALG Geomechanics, Ignasi worked as a Research Engineer at Petrabytes, a software startup providing BigData solutions and visualization tools for the oilfield industry. Here, they developed code for Finite Elements Pre and Post Processor for 3D Geomechanics and optimized data structures for large reservoir grids and other subsurface geobodies.

Before Petrabytes, Ignasi gained research experience at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Ignasi worked as a Research Engineer collaborating with a major Spanish oil company, focusing on hydraulic fracture numerical simulations. Ignasi also developed technology for simulating hydraulic fractures in porous media and coupled hydro-mechanic finite element simulations.

Additionally, Ignasi worked as a Research Associate and Graduate Research Assistant at the Department of Geotechnical Engineering - MECMAT Research Group at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Ignasi also served as a Visiting Research Scholar at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where they reviewed the state of the art of viscoelastic/viscoplastic constitutive laws and integration algorithms.

Early in their career, Ignasi gained industry experience as a Staff Geotechnical Engineer Intern at SOCOTEC, where they reviewed and evaluated building foundation designs, geotechnical survey campaigns, and soil testing results.

Furthermore, Ignasi worked as a Research Intern at the Institut Cartogràfic i Geològic de Catalunya, participating in the RISCMASS European Project focused on the management of soil subsidence and insurance policies. Their tasks included coordinating the production of a technical video and participating in ground subsidence and collapse GPS field campaigns.

Ignasi Aliguer completed a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) degree in Geological Engineering at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya from 2003 to 2008. Following that, they pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering at the same university from 2008 to 2020.
