Derek Mandel has a diverse work experience starting as a Science Facilitator at Science World at TELUS World of Science in 2007. Derek then worked in various roles at the University of Victoria, including Lab Assistant and Research Assistant, where they conducted organic synthesis reactions and characterized reaction products. Derek also worked as a Research Technologist at NOVA Chemicals before moving on to roles at Nordion and Saltworks Technologies, where they held the position of VP, Technology and Projects, focusing on developing and evaluating chelates for targeted imaging and therapy.

Derek Mandel completed a BSc (Honours, Co-op) in Major Chemistry and Minor Biology from the University of Victoria from 2004 to 2011. Derek also studied Chemistry at the University of the Fraser Valley from 2005 to 2006. Later, they pursued a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) in Management of Technology at the Beedie School of Business at Simon Fraser University from 2018 to 2020.
