Joel Sato has extensive experience in the firefighting industry, with their most recent role being Battalion Chief at the San Francisco Fire Department. In this position, they oversaw various emergency and non-emergency tasks, including fire suppression, search and rescue, and emergency medical services operations. Prior to this role, Joel served as an Assistant Deputy Chief and Captain at the Division of Training, where they were responsible for training new firefighters and maintaining training materials. Joel also held positions as a Lieutenant and Firefighter within the department. Outside of the fire department, Joel worked as an Instructor at City College of San Francisco, teaching Fire Science classes. Joel also played an active role in the Asian Firefighters Association of San Francisco, serving as President and Director. Additionally, Joel was an elected member of the Human Relations Committee for the International Association of Fire Fighters, where they developed and recommended policies for affiliates.
Joel Sato obtained their Bachelor's degree in Fire Science from the University of Silicon Valley, where they studied from 2007 to 2010. Before that, they earned an Associates degree in Fire Science from the City College of San Francisco, where they studied from 2005 to 2007. In addition to their formal education, Joel has also obtained several certifications in the field of fire protection. These certifications include Fire Instructor III, Fire Investigator I, Fire Officer, and Hazardous Materials Specialist, which were all obtained from the State of California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection in various years from 2001 to 2009.
