Leo Ballate has a diverse work experience in the technology field. Leo began their career at Deneba Software in 1992 as a Quality Assurance Manager, where they worked until 1994. From 1994 to 1996, Leo worked at Gallery Systems as a Quality Assurance Director. In 1996, they joined the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) as an IT Director and then progressed to become the Chief Technology Officer in 2013. In these roles, Leo was responsible for providing strategic direction and leadership in the field of information technology, as well as advising senior management on IT policy and governance.

Leo Ballate earned a Bachelor's degree in Hospitality Administration/Management from Florida International University in 1988. Leo then went on to obtain a Master's degree in Management Information Systems from the Florida International University College of Business from 1988 to 1992.
