Fatima Avellan, LCSW, has extensive experience in social work and criminal justice, currently serving as a Criminal Justice Specialist II at the San Francisco Public Defender's Office since August 2016. Before this role, Fatima held positions as a Court Alternative Specialist I and Social Worker within the same office. Previous experience includes crisis counseling and medical advocacy at YWCA Metropolitan Chicago and a movement organizing internship with the Illinois Caucus for Adolescent Health. Fatima has also fulfilled leadership roles in service at the University of Chicago and the Association House of Chicago, among others. Education includes a Master’s Degree in Social Work with a concentration in Social Administration from the University of Chicago Crown Family School and a Bachelor of Arts in Urban and Environmental Studies from Occidental College.
