Kat Anderson has extensive experience in law, leadership, and community service. Currently serving as President of the San Francisco Recreation & Parks Department, Kat Anderson is one of seven commissioners overseeing the management of over 220 parks and open spaces in San Francisco, appointed by Mayor London Breed. As a lawyer at the Law Office of Kathleen Stewart Anderson, Kat Anderson specializes in counseling non-profit organizations. Previous roles include managing owner of Word. A Cafe, founder of the Bay News Rising mentorship program for journalism students, columnist for The Marina Times, and various positions within the Pacific Media Workers Guild, including Administrative Officer and Interim Executive Officer, where Kat Anderson developed educational initiatives for aspiring journalists. Kat Anderson also has a background in politics, having run for District 2 Supervisor in San Francisco, and served as an elected member of the San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee. Educational credentials include a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Stanford University and a Juris Doctor from the University of California, College of the Law, San Francisco.

The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department’s Mission is to provide enriching recreational activities, maintain beautiful parks and preserve the environment for the well-being of everyone in our diverse community. The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department administers more than 220 parks, playgrounds, and open spaces, including two outside the city limits-- Camp Mather in Yosemite Valley and Sharp Park in Pacifica, Calif. Our park system includes 25 recreation centers, nine swimming pools, five golf courses and numerous tennis courts, ball diamonds, soccer fields and other sports venues. Included in the department’s responsibilities are the Marina Yacht Harbor, the San Francisco Zoo, and Lake Merced. Our staff members are diverse, committed and talented recreation and park professionals, from gardeners, foresters, and recreation leaders to park patrol officers, custodians, electricians, painters, and more.
