Florian Westphal has extensive work experience in the humanitarian and communications sectors. Florian currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Save The Children Deutschland. Prior to this, they worked as a Non-resident Fellow at the Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi). Florian also held the position of Research Fellow at GPPi, where they focused on a research project into humanitarian protection activities.
Before joining GPPi, Florian was the General Director of Ärzte ohne Grenzen Deutschland/ Médecins Sans Frontières, overseeing the successful management of the organization and engaging in political advocacy. Florian was also a member of the management team of the MSF Operational Centre Amsterdam.
Florian's experience in communications includes working at ICRC as the Deputy Director of Communication and the Head of Public Relations and Media. Florian managed various communication departments and teams, including media relations, online communications, and language services. Florian also served as the Regional Communications Adviser for Asia and Deputy Head of Media Relations at ICRC.
Prior to their humanitarian and communications roles, Florian worked as a Producer and Journalist at Swiss Radio International and the BBC.
Florian Westphal has a solid educational background with degrees in various fields. In 1987, they enrolled at SOAS University of London and completed their Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in Economics & Politics in 1990. Following this, they pursued a Master of Science degree in International Policy from the University of Bristol, graduating in 1998. Westphal further enriched their academic profile by attending Harvard Kennedy School in 2012, where they completed a program in Strategic Management for Leaders of NGOs.
