Leshawn Benedict is a public health professional with extensive experience in leadership, consulting, and education. As the Founder and Consultant of Public Health Insight since January 2020, Leshawn focuses on innovative public health communication and knowledge translation through various mediums, including podcasting. Active in governance, Leshawn serves as a Board Director and Executive Member at the Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities and holds a position on the Nominating & Governance Committee. In academic roles, Leshawn is a Public Health Course Instructor and Doctoral Student Researcher at Georgia Southern University, with involvement as an Area Lead/Consultant for School Mental Health Ontario and as an Advisory Committee Member for the Youth Mental Health and Addiction Champions Initiative at the RNAO. Previous roles include Prevention Program Coordinator at CAMH and Community of Practice Manager at Bruyère Health. Leshawn holds multiple degrees, including a Master of Public Health from Western University and a Master of Science in Global Health Management from McMaster University, with ongoing doctoral studies in Public Health at Georgia Southern University.

Originally founded in 1977, Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities (SCHC) is one of the most established and comprehensive community health organizations in the province. The organization owes its beginnings to 13 community agencies, a core group of community leaders and countless volunteers who identified emerging health and social needs within Scarborough. After incorporating and acquiring not-for-profit status, the organization piloted initiatives that addressed pressing needs while setting new standards of excellence. These initiatives included Meals-on-Wheels, home support, transportation and family support programs. Like Scarborough, SCHC has experienced immense growth since its inception. Today, we employ approximately 205 staff and engage a core group of 350 volunteers. We operate 42 distinct and integrated services across 10 sites that work together to improve the health of our community. ( SCHCOnt ) In order to remain a client-centred, integrated, engaged and proactive organization, we’ve continued to work closely with our community members, foster partnerships with initiatives that address pressing needs while setting new standards of excellence. We work tirelessly to offer programs and opportunities that profoundly impact the health of the communities we serve.
