Dr. Hyams received his undergraduate degree from Vassar College and his M.D. from Columbia University. Surgical residencies at the University of California San Francisco and George Washington University Medical Center were followed by Surgical Oncology fellowships at the U.S. National Cancer Institute and the City of Hope. Dr. Hyams directed Surgical Oncology at the University of Cincinnati and has served on the faculty of Allegheny University of the Health Sciences in Pittsburgh.
A long-time investigator with the NSABP, he was the group’s Executive Medical Officer and Director of Medical Affairs. He later became National Director of Surgical Oncology and Clinical Research for Salick Healthcare, a California-based national cancer center network.
Dr. Hyams has a clinical focus on breast cancer, melanoma, and soft tissue malignancies. Oncoplastic reconstructive procedures are an important part of his surgical practice. Dr. Hyams is an author, lecturer, and investigator. He serves as advisor and consultant for several molecular diagnostics companies, working to advance individualized biologically-directed care.
