Holden Thorp started their work experience in 1993 as a Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Holden later became the Chair of Chemistry, Dean of Arts and Sciences, and ultimately the Chancellor of the university. In 2005, they co-founded Viamet Pharmaceuticals and served as a Consultant until 2017. From 2013 to 2019, they held the positions of Provost and Rita Levi-Montalcini Distinguished University Professor at Washington University in St. Louis. Holden also worked as a Venture Partner at Hatteras Venture Partners starting in 2006. In 2018, Thorp became a Board Member at Artizan Biosciences and served until 2023. Holden joined Ancora as a Senior Adviser, Connections and Insights in 2020. Thorp became a Member of the Board of Directors at PBS in 2021. In 2023, they are set to become a Professor of Chemistry and Medicine at The George Washington University and a Member of the Board of Trustees at Saint Louis University. Additionally, in 2019, they took on the role of Editor In Chief at Science Magazine.
Holden Thorp received their Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where they studied from 1982 to 1986. After completing their undergraduate studies, they pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Chemistry at Caltech, graduating in 1989.
