Phil Thomas

Group Head & Chief Risk Officer at Scotiabank

Phil Thomas was appointed to Chief Risk Officer in October 2021. In this role, he is responsible for global management of risk, including enterprise, credit and market risk along with oversight of Customer Insights, Data & Analytics and the Global Anti-Money Laundering Program.

Phil joined Scotiabank in 1997 and has progressed through a series of increasingly senior positions across the Bank, including roles in Retail Banking, Digital Channels, Contact Centres and Risk Management.

Prior to his role as Chief Risk Officer, Phil was Executive Vice President, Customer Insights, Data & Analytics where he was responsible for the development and oversight of enterprise-wide strategy and governance for Customer Insights, Data & Analytics globally. In this role, Phil established Scotiabank as a leader in ethical data and analytics and advanced the Bank’s ability to deeply know its customers and provide tailored support and advice.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics & Political Science from Dalhousie University. Phil contributes his time to organizations such as the YMCA and Scotiabank’s Women Initiative Advisory Board.
