John Irwin has worked in a variety of roles in the field of ligand discovery. John began their career in 1991 as a Product Line Manager at BioStructure SA. In 1994, they moved to the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology as a Postdoc, where they developed software programs for protein structure determination. In 1998, they became a Staff Scientist at EMBL. From 2000-2004, they worked as a Senior Research Associate at Northwestern University, and as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of California, San Francisco. From 2009-2013, they were the Founder of SeaChange Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and the Founder of Blue Dolphin Lead Discovery LLC. In 2013, they became an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto, and in 2014, they returned to the University of California, San Francisco as an Associate Professor. John has also served on the Organizing Committee of the International School of Crystallography since 1997.
John Irwin completed their education history with a PhD in Organic Chemistry from ETH Zürich between 1988 and 1991. Prior to that, they obtained an M.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Toronto between 1986 and 1987. John had also obtained a B.Sc. in Chemistry/Biochemistry from the University of Toronto between 1981 and 1985.
