Kelly Thompson

Kelly Thompson currently serves as the Executive Director at SECU Family House at UNC Hospitals, a position held since September 2023. Prior to this role, Kelly was the Executive Director of Exchange Family Center from November 2021 to August 2023 and the Development Manager for National Audubon Society, Audubon North Carolina from September 2020 to October 2021. Kelly's extensive experience also includes serving as the Chief Executive Officer for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Illinois from December 2010 to July 2020, where Kelly led a $10.9 million capital campaign to expand services in central Illinois. Earlier career achievements include serving as the Director of the Volunteer & Civic Engagement Center at the University of Illinois Springfield, where Kelly received the Vice Chancellor's Award for Excellence in 2010, and as Communications Director for the American Heart Association, winning several prestigious awards. Kelly holds a BA in Communications and Political Science from the University of Missouri-Columbia and an MA in Communication from the University of Illinois Springfield.

SECU Family House at UNC Hospitals

SECU Family House provides safe, nurturing, affordable lodging for those traveling to nearby UNC Hospitals for treatment of serious health conditions. Guests are provided not only lodging, but are also offered meals, supportive programs, transportation, and a caring support network. Since 2008, we have served more than 33,000 guests from all 100 NC counties, 44 states, and multiple countries. All share a common thread—they, or their loved one is facing treatment for serious illness or injury such as cancer, organ or stem cell transplant, life-threatening burns, traumatic injuries, severe eating disorders, postpartum depression, and more. Family House provides a supportive environment help them rest, heal, and gather strength when they need it most. With a recent expansion to meet demand for our unique accommodations, the House now offers 75 guest rooms and suites. The House’s beautiful and comfortable common areas, including a Great Room with a fireplace and a large, modern kitchen, set it apart —providing guests, united by similar circumstances, opportunities to form friendships and networks of support. Demand for our rooms is high and with the recent expansion from 40 to 75 rooms, we are so grateful to and reliant on our generous donors and wonderful volunteers.
