Ashoka Polpitiya has a diverse work experience in the field of bioinformatics and data science. Ashoka started their career as a Lecturer at the University of Peradeniya, School of Engineering in 1996. Ashoka then worked as a Senior Scientist at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, where they developed algorithms and methods for quantitative proteomics research. Ashoka was also a Bioinformatics Group Leader for Proteomics at TGen, responsible for setting up the informatics infrastructure and algorithm development for protein biomarker discovery.
In 2012, Ashoka joined Sera Prognostics as a Director of Bioinformatics and Biostatistics, where they played a key role in developing diagnostic tests for the prediction of pregnancy complications. Ashoka later became a Data Science Consultant for the same company.
In 2016, Ashoka joined Sri Lanka Technological Campus as a Professor of Engineering and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Ashoka held this position until 2019. Overall, Ashoka has a strong background in bioinformatics, data science, and algorithm development for proteomics research.
Ashoka Polpitiya completed their education with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Peradeniya from 1992 to 1996. Ashoka then pursued a Master of Science degree in Systems Science and Mathematics from Washington University in St. Louis from 1998 to 2000. Following this, they obtained a Doctor of Science degree in Systems Science and Mathematics from the same university, studying from 2000 to 2004. Lastly, they attended Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis from 2004 to 2006, where they completed a post-doctoral program in Bioinformatics.
