John MacConnell began their work experience in 2007 as a Senior Art Director at Shahid / Kraus & Company, a branding and design agency. John was responsible for creative development and designing memorable campaigns for various clients. In the same year, they also worked as an artist and graphic designer, providing their services to clients such as Google, Abercrombie & Fitch, and The Advocate Magazine.
In 2010, John MacConnell took on a role as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Long Island University, where they taught a course on illustration and graphic design. John created the curriculum for the course and played a role in establishing a new division within the Visual Arts Department.
During the same period, they also held the position of Coordinator of Special Projects at Harlem United, a non-profit organization serving the homeless living with HIV and AIDS. John worked closely with the Chief Program Officer and had various responsibilities, including developing initiatives, maintaining reports for the Board of Directors, and designing agency materials and merchandise.

John MacConnell attended the School of Visual Arts from 2007 to 2009, where they earned a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Illustration as Visual Essay. Prior to that, they studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art from 2003 to 2007, obtaining a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in Illustration. In 2006, they participated in a study abroad program at the Willem de Kooning Academie, focusing on Illustration and Design.
