John Cass has extensive experience in the transportation industry, currently serving as Secretary for Local 1117 at SMART Transportation Division since April 2013. In addition, John has worked as a Conductor at Union Pacific Railroad since August 2004, with responsibilities including the safe movement of trains in the yards and over the road. Prior to these roles, John gained experience as an Order Selector at Associated Grocers from November 1996 to November 1999. John Cass pursued education at Ivy Tech State College from 2000 to 2002.

We are the SMART Transportation Division, an AFL-CIO affiliate headquartered near Cleveland, Ohio. We are a broad-based, transportation labor union representing about 125,000 active and retired railroad, bus, mass transit and airline workers in the United States. With offices in Cleveland and Washington, D.C., the SMART TD is the largest railroad operating union in North America, with more than 500 locals. The SMART TD (formerly UTU) represents employees on every Class I railroad, as well as employees on many regional and shortline railroads. It also represents bus and mass transit employees on approximately 45 bus and transit systems and has recently grown to include airline pilots, dispatchers and other airport personnel.
