Jens Wieting

Senior Forest And Climate Campaigner at Sierra Club BC

Jens works on protecting BC’s spectacular rainforest and fighting global warming. His primary focus are solutions to maintain the ecological integrity and the climate-stabilizing role of BC’s globally rare temperate rainforests, from Vancouver Island to the Great Bear Rainforest. Jens is following climate science and advocates for strong climate action to phase out fossil fuels and speed up the transition to zero emissions.

Growing up on the coast of the North Sea in West Germany, Jens became passionate about nature at a young age. After spending some time in the Amazon rainforest between high school and university, he got hooked on rainforests and concerned about their fate. He studied land use planning at the Technische Universitaet Berlin, where he also worked for a land use planning office.

Prior to coming to Canada, Jens worked as Tropical Forest Campaigner for German environmental organization Robin Wood, helping protect the rainforest of Indonesia. He also worked for a German development cooperation in Nicaragua to help conservation planning in Biosphere Reserve Bosawas, the largest tropical rainforest region of Central America. Jens has written numerous articles for Canadian and German newspapers about environmental issues.

Jens enjoys spending time with his family hiking and camping in the rainforest, mountains and on the coast. He is a passionate nature photographer, always ready to get muddy to take pictures of critters and giant trees of the rainforests he loves.
