Matthew B. Abrams

Member at Sills Cummis & Gross

Matthew B. Abrams is a Member of the Sills Cummis & Gross Tax, Trusts and Estates Practice Group. His practice focuses on trusts and estates matters, including estate planning, probate, administration and Surrogate’s Court litigation.

Mr. Abrams frequently assists individuals and families at every stage of life and planning – preparing for marriage, anticipating children, saving for higher education and retirement, updating and improving existing estate planning documents and structures, counseling generations into advanced health care and investment planning, and guiding grieving families through the estate administration process. He advises beneficiaries, legatees, executors, administrators, and trustees on every aspect of fiduciary responsibility and practice. Mr. Abrams is frequently called upon to consult on whether fiduciaries can be removed, held financially accountable, or compelled to act, utilizing his drafting experience to know how the documents should operate; just as often, he is called upon to review previously drafted and executed documents to aid clients in finding the gaps and pitfalls in their plans, utilizing his litigation experience to note where reality may derail a theoretically ‘perfect’ structure. Beyond the primary concepts of estate planning and estate administration, Mr. Abrams advises non-citizen non-domiciliary clients on international structures and estate planning vehicles where appropriate to reduce the impact of estate tax on those clients’ estates. Mr. Abrams also takes on an advisory role for families facing the complex and delicate world of elder law, including long-term care and Medicaid planning, with an eye toward an entire-life commitment of service to clients.
