Roar Adland, Ph.D., FICS, has an extensive background in shipping economics and research. Roar currently holds the position of Global Head of Research at SSY - Simpson Spence Young, where they manage a team of analysts and engages with clients regarding freight and FFA markets, digitalization, and decarbonization. Prior to this role, Roar was a Professor of Shipping Economics at the Norwegian School of Economics (NHH) for over a decade. Roar has also served as a Visiting Research Scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, focusing on digitalization, smart contracts, and blockchain in shipping. Earlier in their career, Roar worked at Clarksons Platou as a freight derivatives portfolio manager and a drybulk analyst, and they were a Postdoc Researcher at NHH and a Research Associate at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Throughout their career, Roar has demonstrated expertise in various aspects of the shipping industry and has made valuable contributions to research and analysis.
Roar Adland (Ph.D., FICS) received their primary education in the field of Marine Engineering from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), where they obtained an M.Sc. degree from 1991 to 1995. Roar furthered their studies at the Norwegian School of Economics (NHH) from 1996 to 1998, specializing in Shipping Economics and earning an M. Phil. degree.
Continuing their academic journey, Roar Adland pursued a Ph.D. in Shipping, Finance from the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 1998 to 2002, further enhancing their knowledge in the domain.
Additionally, Roar Adland holds a certification as a Chartered Shipbroker from the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, which they obtained in April 2021.
