Sonja Studer

Sonja is Head of Education and Member of the Executive Board of the Association of the Swiss Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Industries (Swissmem).

Sonja studied Environmental Science at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH). Where she also completed her PhD in Microbiology. She worked as Head of Fuels and Environment at the Swiss Petroleum Association and later joined the University of Hong Kong as Senior Project Officer for Urban Planning and Environmental Management, heading research projects on topics such as environment management and corporate climate strategies. Previously, Sonja had also gained first-hand exposure to environment protection by working on forest protection measures in Ecuador. Sonja is a member of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences SATW, and she has held other distinguished pro bono positions in organisations such as Cleantech Switzerland (Vice President and Board Member), the Energy Agency of the Swiss Private Sector EnAW (Board of Directors), and others. In 2008, Sonja joined Swissmem as Head of the Energy and Environment. In 2019 she was appointed Member of Swissmem’s Executive Board and Head of the Education Division where her responsibilities include educational policy as well as Swissmem’s various acitivities in the field of formal and non-formal education, Vocational Education and Training and lifelong learning. She represents Swissmem in numerous committees, boards and working groups on a national and European level.
