In the role as the Skokie Skatium Ice Arena as Facility Manager, von Helms oversees all operations and programming, ensuring a high-quality experience for patrons. He leads the ice arena team with expertise, managing everything from daily operations to long-term planning and budgeting. Von Helms develops and evaluates programs, including hockey, figure skating, and open skate, while maintaining high standards for safety, facility management, and customer satisfaction. He also supervises equipment maintenance, facility repairs, and ice quality, collaborating with staff and community groups to meet diverse needs. With a commitment to excellence, he fosters a welcoming environment and continuously enhances the Skatium's offerings.
Von Helms makes the most of his free time by swimming in open water, mountain biking, hitting the gym, and riding roller coasters. A particularly memorable moment in his life was sharing breakfast with former All-Star and batting champion Bill "Mad Dog" Madlock without initially realizing who he was! Music and books are essential in his life. A die-hard Chicago Cubs fan, von Helms enjoys a mix of rock, classic rock, rockabilly, metal, and blues. His favorite band? The surf-rocking Los Straitjackets.

The Skokie Park District takes pride in its ability to serve the more than 63,000 residents of Skokie, Illinois and its customers throughout Chicagoland. Whether protecting natural resources, preserving historical sites or providing thousands of unique recreational opportunities within its more than 240 acres of parkland, the district has offered a multitude of quality programs since 1928. In addition to its diverse array of programs and special events, the Skokie Park District also offers summer camps, state-licensed full-day childcare and preschool, and before- and after-school care for grades K-5. The district is a past winner of the “National Gold Medal for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management.”
