Oliver Stone

A trusted, senior advisor with close to three decades of patent drafting and prosecution expertise, Oliver provides extensive, first-hand experience practicing before UK, European, U.S. and Canadian patent and trademark offices. He uses this unique, international perspective to both counsel Canadian technology clients on their overseas applications and advise foreign associates on any procedural differences and potential challenges in Canada.

Oliver has deep expertise in the preparation of industrial design applications and all aspects of the Canadian patent procurement process including: assessing patentability and performing freedom-to-operate searches; drafting applications; reporting and responding to Office Actions; preparing infringement and validity opinions; and counselling clients regarding portfolio management strategies.

Outside of Canada, Oliver has practiced before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the United Kingdom Intellectual Property Office and the European Patent Office.

Oliver has a track record of securing patent grants in difficult and complex cases. He has successfully drafted patent applications in a wide range of technologies, including telecommunications, electronic devices, processor architecture, imaging systems (including MRI and laser cameras), flight control systems, power generation, protective garments for military and emergency service personnel, solar energy capture and conversion systems, and anti-counterfeiting and security devices.

In addition to counselling Canadian innovators and large multinational companies, Oliver has supported Canadian universities and government research organizations. He has also assisted large corporate clients based in the United States, Korea and Japan with their Canadian patent procurement needs.
