With more than two decades of experience counselling clients on the creation, protection and management of IP rights, Tim has a track record of helping clients secure IP assets that create strategic commercial opportunities.

In his practice, Tim focuses on all aspects of drafting, filing and prosecuting patent applications, working with clients in the oil & gas and energy sector on applications related to mechanical equipment. He also has experience working in the field of medical devices.

Tim’s combined expertise as a lawyer, engineer and patent agent allow him to provide clients with practical counsel on the patentability of innovations and to guide them in developing a clear IP strategy and portfolio of strategic IP assets.

Clients frequently ask Tim for his legal opinions and strategic counsel on complex IP areas including freedom to operate opinions, patent infringement opinions, patent validity and patent clearance, and patent enforcement and litigation. In addition, clients turn to him for strategic guidance on establishing intellectual property policies, conducting due diligence and contractual interpretation.

Prior to joining Smart & Biggar, Tim was a Partner in the IP practice of a national full-service firm.
